What is CCRIS?

  • Stands for Central Credit Reference Information System.
  • Owned and operated by BNM to facilitate credit risk management among banks.
  • CCRIS processes data received from participating financial institutions and turns them into credit reports.
  • These credit reports are then made available to financial institutions, borrowers (upon request), and approved credit reporting agencies (with borrower's consent).
  • Borrowers can access their credit reports online via eCCRIS for free.

Who can access the CCRIS Report?

  • Any individual borrower or company for their own credit report;
  • Any individual for the credit report of their own business(es) i.e. sole proprietorship, partnership, or professional body;
  • Financial institutions, upon any credit application and/or when reviewing credit standing of existing customers; and
  • Credit Reporting Agencies approved by BNM and with consent from the borrower.

In addition to this, CCRIS Report can also be requested in the case of a:

CCRIS Myths

Common misconceptions about CCRIS

1
CCRIS is a blacklist of bad borrowers.

Fact: CCRIS only stores borrowerĄ¯s financing details and repayment history. It is NOT a list of names of borrowers with poor repayment history.

2
CCRIS and CTOS/Credit Bureau Malaysia/Experian are the same.

Fact: CCRIS is owned and managed by BNM. On the other hand, CTOS/Credit Bureau Malaysia/Experian are credit reporting agencies registered by the Ministry of Finance under the Credit Reporting Agencies Act 2010. These three credit reporting agencies have approval to access the CCRIS system to provide private credit reports to their users, which may include more information than CCRIS.

3
CCRIS has extensive information on all borrowers.

Fact: CCRIS only includes specified financing and borrower information from participating financial institutions. Financial institutions and credit reporting agencies may collect more information about borrowers from sources other than CCRIS.

4
CCRIS records all loans/financing/debt.

Fact: Only loans/financing from participating financial institutions are included in CCRIS, which includes those regulated by BNM. There are credit institutions that do not participate in CCRIS.

5
Apart from me, anyone can access my CCRIS Report

Fact: CCRIS report is confidential. It can only be accessed by participating financial institutions and approved credit reporting agencies (upon your consent). Its use is strictly regulated, with penalties for unauthorised access, abuse, or misuse of information.

6
My previous arrears record are not removed from CCRIS even after I settled them.

Fact: If you have settled your arrears, then it will appear in your subsequent month's record. However, previous arrears will still be there as CCRIS Report shows a 12-month factual record of your repayment history.

7
CCRIS Report is outdated.

Fact: Participating financial institutions are duty-bound to provide accurate credit information and update them in a timely manner. Any updates to a borrower's credit history can only be made by the reporting financial institutions themselves and will be reflected in CCRIS on the 10th of the subsequent month, subject to public holidays.

Credit Reporting Agencies with access to CCRIS

Subject to the approval by BNM, credit reporting agencies (CRAs) registered under the Credit Reporting Agencies Act 2010, can access the credit information of borrowers in CCRIS, with prior consent from the borrowers.

To date, three CRAs have been approved:

  • Credit Bureau Malaysia Sdn Bhd;
  • CTOS Data Systems Sdn Bhd; and
  • Experian Information Services (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd

Participating Financial Institutions that subscribe to these CRAs may request for credit reports of an applicant or borrower, directly from the CRAs to facilitate their lending decisions.
